The 60-Second Thrift Profit Checklist
A back-pocket field card for thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales, flea markets, and donation runs. Grade it, price it, decide, before you reach the register.
Condition codes buyers trust
Use these standard abbreviations in your titles and descriptions. They set expectations, cut returns, and build buyer trust.
- NWT
- New With TagsUnused, with the original retail tags still attached.
- NWOT
- New Without TagsUnused, no signs of wear, but the tags were removed.
- EUC
- Excellent Used Cond.Barely worn, no flaws, looks almost new.
- VGUC
- Very Good Used Cond.Minor wash wear, no major flaws.
- GUC
- Good Used Cond.Visible wear, or a minor flaw you document up front.
- VTG
- VintageTypically 20+ years old (roughly pre-2005).
- DS
- Deadstock / NOSA vintage piece that was never worn or used.
Know your real profit
The number in your head is never the real number. Run it through this before you buy.
Starter rule: aim for at least 3× what you pay, a $5 find needs a verified $15+ sold comp to be worth your time. Inspect when condition or authenticity changes the math. Skip when the sold data is thin.
Take these 3 photos
Full item
Show the whole piece, its shape, color, and a sense of scale.
Maker mark
Capture the tag, stamp, label, model number, or signature.
Condition
Show any cracks, stains, missing parts, wear, or serial details.
Five red flags
- No exact maker, model, size, or era you can pin down.
- Damage, odor, missing parts, or dead batteries.
- Bulky, fragile, or costly to ship (over 1 lb pushes shipping from ~$5 to ~$8+).
- A fake-prone brand with weak proof of authenticity.
- Many active listings but few sold, a slow sell-through rate.
Tag & date tells
Quick ways to spot potentially valuable older apparel before anyone else does.
Single-stitch seams
A single row of stitching at the hem and sleeves often means the piece was made before the mid-1990s.
"Made in USA" tag
Most apparel manufacturing moved overseas by the early 2000s, so a Made in USA tag is a strong vintage signal.
Crisp paper tags
Papery tags that tear easily are usually older than modern woven, silky, or printed neck labels.
Text-only care label
Care tags with no symbols, or that say “do not iron decoration,” tend to be older.
